9 Clinical Signs of a Narcissist: Understanding Narcissistic Personality Disorder

The word narcissist gets used a lot these days, but Narcissistic Personality Disorder is more than simply being selfish, arrogant, or difficult. It is a recognized mental health condition with specific diagnostic criteria that professionals use when evaluating a person’s behavior and personality patterns. Understanding these signs can help you recognize concerning behaviors, especially in relationships, while also remembering that only a qualified mental health professional can make an actual diagnosis. There are nine primary criteria associated with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and generally, you have to have 5 or more for a professional to declare someone as a narcissist.

9 Primary Criteria for NPD

1. Grandiose sense of self-importance.
They may exaggerate their talents, achievements, or importance.

2. Fantasies of success, power, beauty, or ideal love.
They may constantly imagine being exceptionally successful, admired, or special.

3. Believing they are unique or superior.
They may feel only certain high-status or “special” people can understand them.

4. Needing excessive admiration.
They may crave praise, attention, and constant validation.

5. Sense of entitlement.
They may expect special treatment or believe others should automatically meet their needs.

6. Exploiting others.
They may use people to get what they want.

7. Lack of empathy.
They may struggle to recognize or care about the feelings and needs of others.

8. Envy.
They may envy others or believe others are jealous of them.

9. Arrogant behavior or attitude.
They may act superior, dismissive, or condescending.

Now, an important point: gaslighting and manipulation are not separate Diagnostic criteria for a narcisist, but they can still appear in unhealthy or abusive relationships.

And remember, having a few of these traits does not automatically mean someone has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Only a qualified professional can make that diagnosis, not me or you, this is just a guide to give you some more understanding of what NPD is.
