Find Peace, Calm & Faith in the Center of the Storm: Rachel Devine

No matter what is happening in the world or your world, there is a center, an eye of the storm if you will, that is attainable for all of us. Sometimes it’s hard to see. Sometimes it eludes us. But make no mistake, there is a calm that is available to everyone.

When things are going well, we go about life one day at a time with purpose and confidence. It is during times of turmoil that things seem to spin out of control. This is the time we need an anchor to help us from drowning. The calm that can curb the stormy feelings is our faith in our Higher Power, whom I proudly call God.

Our anchor in any storm is the faith that was built prior to the storm. Jesus tells us that we must have a firm foundation so when the storms of life hit, we will have this foundation of faith to hold onto.

Matthew 7:24-27

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

The key is to have a firm foundation in faith to be able to withstand the many storms of life that will eventually come to pass.

Annie Dillard put it so succinctly when she said:

“No one escapes the wilderness on the way to the promised land.”

The world will always have horrible events that rattle us to the core. There will always be some kind of death in our family of origin. After all, anything that is alive will eventually die. There will always be something that happens, like the senseless evil assassination of Charlie Kirk millions of people can’t wrap their head around. Our grief is heavy. This tragic event has many people asking why God would allow this senseless tragedy where Charlie leaves behind a faith-centered wife and two beautiful children, ages 1 and 3! Charlie was a man of great faith just trying to have a conversation with people on college campus, to try to instill his Christian values when he was gunned down by evil.

I remember Joel Osteen saying once, when something so tragic and evil happens, and we ask why God allowed it, we can file it away in a box that says, “I just don’t know.”

No one knows God’s greater plan for Charlie or any of us. It is a tragedy behind comprehension. All we do know, for sure is that when the storms of life come crashing down, the only way to truly survive is with our firm foundation in our faith in God, which is the very eye of the storm. This is the place where we are safe from all the emotional destruction of the storm. We can take refuge in the eye of the storm, where there is peace, calm and our faith, as we grieve the loss of a wonderful soul. And it’s never too late to build your foundation of faith so you have it for the next storm.
